But there is much else to see in the country. There are 16 national parks, nine natural monuments and six scientific reserves in the Dominican Republic.

In our capital Santo Domingo, you'll find Catedral Primada de America, the first cathedral built in the New World. A host of other museums and colonial buildings are there as well: the Fortaleza Ozama, the oldest fortress in America; the Alcázar de Colón, once the residence of Don Diego Colón, the son of Christopher Columbus who became viceroy of the colony; and the Museo de las Casas Reales, the former Palace of the Governor General.
