What types of documents are needed to visit or stay in the Dominican Republic?

For a short visit:

Citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico and countries of the European Union can stay in the Dominican Republic for a maximum of 90 days with a tourist card which costs $10 (U.S.) and can be purchased at accredited Dominican Consulates worldwide or when purchasing an airline ticket or on arrival at one of the country's ports or international airports. Although other forms of identification, such as a birth certificate, can be used to enter the Dominican Republic, U.S. citizens need their passports to leave the Dominican Republic to return to the United States.

Citizens of many other countries can purchase tourist cards as well. Additional information concerning visas may be obtained from: Visa Section, Consular Department of the Foreign Office, Tel. (809) 535-6280, ext. 326.

Permanent residency or retirement in the Dominican Republic often looks attractive to visitors because of our affordable real estate and moderate cost of living. For Europeans and Americans, residency also offers tax advantages. The process of seeking legal residency and citizenship is relatively simple.
